Corporate Employees: Will a Handheld Make Them More Efficient?

Over the last few years, the terms "road warrior", "mobile workforce" or "remote employee" have become as common in modern corporate culture as the word "cell phone" and the cell phone itself. It is generally agreed that wireless technologies help mobile employees be more productive but we often forget that other workers who do not traditionally take advantage of mobile devices could also benefit, increasing their efficiency, productivity, and, ultimately, corporate success.

BlackBerry, Treo, PocketPC, Windows Mobile and other light weight smartphones have become ubiquitous in the corporate world, enabling mobile workers such as small business owners and executives, outside sales representatives and field technicians to communicate with coworkers and customers, close deals more quickly, schedule meetings, and access data on customer service calls. By equipping these employees with mobile devices they have the ability to stay connected to the office no matter where they may be and whenever necessary enhancing communication between team members and increasing corporate productivity and profitability.

But what about other employees who traditionally spend most of their time in the office? Could they also benefit from a BlackBerry, Treo, PocketPC or Windows Mobile handheld device?

Administrative personnel.
Office managers, assistants and other administrative staff are thought to stay at their desks for the most of the day. However, many of their tasks require them to leave their desk - whether they need to send mail, or assist someone at a meeting, or organize supplies. Administrative employees often have to multitask, working on a few activities at once. Although physically on site, they may be difficult to reach without the use of a mobile device. They will benefit from freedom of movement, and, at the same time, always be available when needed.

Middle management.
If you ask your company's managers what percentage of their time is spent in meetings, you will get an answer of somewhere between 40 to 80 percent. Meeting productivity can be improved by the use of wireless devices which allow access to relevant information during the meeting. Notes can also be taken and shared with colleagues immediately and attendee availability can be checked to schedule a follow-up meeting. Immediate access to information through a mobile device improves the effectiveness of managers while away from their desks.

Project managers.
Workers such as those at construction sites, hotels, warehouses, and educational institutions are on the job site but rarely reachable on their office phone or PC. The need for projects to run smoothly requires them to continually be on the move and their productivity can be significantly improved by the use of a mobile device as they will be able to check schedules, contacts, addresses and project data without having to return to their desks.

Many professionals who have handheld devices provided by their employer often use them during off-business hours as well. For some, it is more efficient to respond to messages as soon as they are received (even on a weekend), than spend an hour or more on Monday morning catching up on email. Others may use their handheld device to read industry or professional communications while commuting. Wireless technologies provide employees with more opportunities for flexibility in the office and outside of the office, letting them stay connected to business matters and promptly respond to urgent issues. With the help of mobility solutions, employees can be as productive as they would be at their desks, no matter where their day takes them.
