The Gramm-Leach Bliley Act, enacted in 1999, imposes rules on banks, brokerage firms, tax preparation firms, insurance companies, consumer credit reporting agencies and numerous other financial services firms and dictates how they handle their customers’ personal financial data.  Violation of this Act can result in up to a $100,000 fine and 5 years in jail.

• Section 6801 (b)(1):  Requires that an organizations’ email messages are encrypted when transmitted to protect customer data.
