Setup Autodiscover for Microsoft Outlook 2007 & 2010 on Microsoft Exchange Server 2010

To start using the Outlook Auto Connect feature, you will need a CNAME DNS record also known as an alias record, for a host “Autodiscover” in your domain and pointing to our server. To setup the CNAME, login to your DNS provider’s website or follow your usual DNS administration process. You want to add a new record of type “CNAME” with a host name of “Autodiscover” to your domain.

Note: If your company signed up for Exchange 2010 after 3/29/2012 then you have the Enterprise version of Exchange 2010.  Please replace "yourdomain.com" with your domain.

SH11 Exchange 2010 Enterprise:
Point the CNAME record for autodiscover.yourdomain.com to: adr11.123together.com

SH10 Exchange 2010 Hosted:
Point the CNAME record for autodiscover.yourdomain.com to: adr10.123together.com

Due to the nature of DNS, the CNAME record you created may take up to 4-8 hours to propagate. You will be able to take advantage of the Auto Connect feature only when DNS changes have fully propagated.

With the proper Autodiscover setup, you should receive a “do you trust this site” message once when setting up Microsoft Outlook.  You should check the box to always trust and allow this connection.

Please note: You will need at least Microsoft Outlook 2007 SP2 to be able to utilize the auto connect feature.

Issues you might experience if you don't have the CNAME record set up for Auto Discover:

  • You will not be able to see the free/busy information.
  • Your Offline Address Book might generate a SYNC error 0x8000401F.
  • The Outlook 2007/2010 auto configuration will not work.
  • Outlook Repair tool may not work properly.

Because of the above reasons, we highly suggest that you set up the CNAME for Auto Discover when using Microsoft Outlook 2007/2010 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010.
